Our Portugal, My Lens.
Hi. I'm Vanessa. I was born in Coimbra, Portugal, where some of my earliest memories revolve around food. Not fancy food. Real food.
Fresh bread from the neighborhood bakery. Long lunches that somehow turned into dinner. Family gathered around a table where there was always one more chair to pull up and one more story to tell.
When I was young, my family moved to the East Coast of the States, bringing Portugal with us in whatever ways we could. The language stayed. The traditions stayed. And thankfully... so did the recipes. When I was twenty, life shifted again.
My parents and sister moved back to Portugal while I stayed in the United States (with a brief stint in England). For the next fourteen years, home existed in two places at once. I traveled back whenever I could, soaking up every café, market, family dinner, and Sunday afternoon that reminded me where I came from.
Eventually, my parents returned to California to spend time with their grandchildren and eleven years later, retirement called them home once again, and these days they spend most of the year back in Portugal... just like about ninety percent of the rest of my family. They always show up when it matters - Christmas, graduations, big life events. Just like they always have. And it's something they've always taught me. To show up as authentically as you can.
So that's what I'm doing here in California with my incredible wife and our four boys. Doing my best to make sure they grow up knowing the Portugal that shaped me.
Why The Tuga Table Exists
People often ask me what I miss most about Portugal. Sometimes it's the cafés. Sometimes it's the sound of Portuguese being spoken all around me. Sometimes it's watching the Atlantic crash against the cliffs.
But if I'm being honest...
It's my family. And most days... it's the table.
Because in Portugal, the table isn't just where you eat.
It's where birthdays happen. It's where arguments are settled. It's where grandparents teach grandchildren. It's where recipes are never written down because someone always knows them by heart. It's where life happens.
The older I get, the more I realize that recipes are really just stories with ingredients. And stories deserve to be preserved.
Pull Up a Chair
Whether you're here because you're craving your avó's caldo verde...
Trying to master the perfect bifana...
Wondering why we have so many bacalhau recipes...
Or simply looking for an excuse to drizzle really good olive oil over just about everything...
I'm so glad you're here.
My hope is that these recipes bring a little Portugal into your home. That they start conversations.
That they become family favorites.
And that somewhere along the way, they remind you that the best meals have never just been about the food. They've always been about the people gathered around it.
So welcome to The Tuga Table. There's always room for one more.

The Tuga Table Is Dedicated to My Grandma - Maria da Encarnação Ferreira Mendes

She filled every table with love. Her food healed things. And she was one of the coolest damn people I ever knew.
